I pass urgently to my readers the cheering news that Mr Knight, curator of the Horsham Museum (note 131) and forever ahead of the crowd, will shortly be opening the doors to his exhibition of ‘Captain’ Capability Brown, and the great landscape gardener’s plan for Hills Park, Horsham will be on display.

The news has been passed to me, assuredly not in confidence, by that redoubtable enthusiast, Dr F of Sussex, so often the champion of things secret and little known. For anyone unfamiliar with Brownian cartography, this will be a place of pilgrimage.

What makes Mr Knight’s timing peculiarly à propos is that Brown is perfectly likely to have been born in early February 1716 (note 143) – a birthday tribute then, to a great man.
