The proud answer is yes and yes, and furthermore this day (20th January) could be the birthday of that elegant moulder of the elements, Capability Brown (note 143).
Now, on a recent visit to Derbyshire I was accosted by Mr P of Chesterfield who asked where he could find out more about Brown and what he actually did on each site. Not unnaturally, I recommended the master-classes which are to be conducted by our editor John Phibbs. Booking for the first three is now open – Monday 11th April at Claremont, Surrey; Wednesday 13th April at Weston Park, Staffordshire; Friday 15th April at Fawsley Hall, Northamptonshire. Phibbs, known to be a contrary sort of fellow, dressed like an anarchist and in need of a good scrubbing, nonetheless seems to have acted with some care in choosing sites in different parts of the country and from different periods of Brown’s career. They also represent quite different challenges that he resolved in quite different ways.
Come to one, come to all. You’ll find yourselves very welcome.
